Joseph Cassara’s “Notes on the Notebook of a Five-Year-Old Neurotic”
I love everything about this. I love that it’s in PANK. I love the voice, I love the myriad overly explanatory subtitles, I love the premise, I love the sense of circling around the issue — a one-line story written by the author’s five-year-old self — to ponder it from every conceivable angle, I love his perception of himself at five years old, I love the pastiche of dictionary entries and Q&As and deconstructions and chronologies. I love its self-conscious insistence upon itself, really.
PS. Do you notice how I’m using single spaces between sentences? No, you probably didn’t. Conclusion: no one cares, Farhad.
